Mixed Use Living in Berlin starts at Süd-Kreuz
It is one of the most ambitious construction projects in Berlin: the Süd-Kreuz residential quarter in Schöneberg.
With around 665 residential units for almost 1,200 residents and additional office and commercial space, the 21,000-square-meter site will in future offer everything for lively and cross-generational togetherness and sharing. Under the central guiding principle of “Mixed Use Living”, the internationally operating real estate group Hines for the first time developed and implemented such a project in Europe.
It stands for state-of-the-art living quality, for innovation and sustainable construction, for communication and recreation, as well as for international trends such as co-living and co-working. All in all, a contemporary interpretation of the so-called “Berlin mix” of living and working in one place, of community.
Thus, the concept includes, among other things, a variety of facilities, such as spacious pavilions in the landscaped courtyards, bouldering and green walls, landscaped roof gardens, several guest apartments, as well as fitness and hobby rooms and a laundromat, which will be available for free use by the residents here. There will even be a communal neighborhood dog in the future.
“Neighborhood festival instead of topping-out ceremony”
In order to introduce the project to the public and give interested parties more insight, our client Hines decided against a classic topping-out ceremony and commissioned us with the conceptual development and implementation of a pre-opening event, as a unique neighborhood festival.
The focus of our event concept and its implementation was to create a space on the existing building site that allowed the entire project and the idea of “Mixed Use Living” to be experienced before its completion.
For this purpose, the design concept and the event content were consistently aligned with the themes of the local residential community, building-specific sustainability and the design of green living spaces (urban gardening), staged and bundled in a “get together”. Embedded in large-format design representations and a fully landscaped event area, a worthy setting for the event was created.
All project participants, guests from politics and business, as well as national and international press representatives were invited.
Onsite the guests were able to get extensive information about the project on a guided tour of the area. At the subsequent celebration, in one of the inner courtyards of the residential complex, where we designed and created an event space, the implementation and construction progress of the living spaces created here was presented by representatives of the project developer Hines and honored by local politicians.
The highlight of the event was the joint planting campaign by Christoph Reschke, Hines Germany Co-Chief Executive Officer, Senator Katrin Lompscher, and Building City Councilor Jörn Oltmann. A sign and symbolic start for the joint development of the area. At the same time, it was a tangible and lively impulse for all participants regarding the future attitude towards life and togetherness in the neighborhood.
We are pleased that, together with our client, we have succeeded in giving the vision of the Smart Building, as a new environmentally friendly living and design space, a worthy platform through this event.
